About Us

Helen and Tahir Hasan, founded the charity Bridging Frontiers, to provide relief for people caught up in the earthquake that devastated Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.

At 8.50am Saturday 8th October 2005, a major earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale, struck Northern Pakistan & adjoining areas. It was similar in scale to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the 1935 Quetta Earthquake. The earthquake caused catastrophic damage. The worst hit areas were Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province, Western and Southern parts of the Kashmir valley in Indian-administered Kashmir.

As Saturday is a normal school day in the region children were disproportionately affected. Many were buried under collapsed school buildings. It was also the month of Ramadan and adults were taking a nap after their pre-dawn meal. Many were buried in their homes because they did not have time to escape during the quake.

The earthquake triggered massive landslides and caused major structural damage.

The regional infrastructure (roads, hospitals, power stations, water supplies, communications etc.) was devastated.

The altitude and terrain of the area affected make access possible only by helicopter. The onset of winter, snow and sub-zero temperatures add further urgency to required aid effort.
